The Honda Civic Type R – With a New Limited Edition for 2021
You may think of the Honda Civic Type R as a strictly “track-only” type of car. The truth, however, is that this is actually an eminently practical car suitable for the everyday driver as well as the speed enthusiast. Yes, it’s a dynamic, entertaining and spirited ride, but there’s also great amounts of interior space, and it is a four-door hatchback, not a two-door, making it a great family choice, too.

So, what will change in 2021? Probably the most exciting news is that Honda have confirmed the arrival of a Limited Edition Type R for 2021. What’s more, the term “limited” in this case is no gimmick. There will only be 1,000 units produced, and 600 of those have been allocated to the US market. That’ll make competition for acquiring them quire fierce.

This new Limited Edition Type R will arrive some time in September/October, coming in Phoenix Yellow Pearl paint exclusively, along with a glossy black roof panel. The exterior mirrors and hood scoop will also be in the same gloss-black finish. It will also be 38 pounds lighter than the typical Type R, with Michelin Sport Cup 2 tires. According to Honda, there will also be enhanced damping and handling, making it yet more exciting to drive. True fans wanting to get hold of the Limited Edition will have to be fast with their orders!

Even the regular Type R has always been a truly special hatchback, and it’ll be no different in 2021. You can expect the same impressive powertrain --- turbocharged 4-cylinder delivering 306hp and 295lb-ft of torque. Fans of the racing sound may be somewhat disappointed to learn that the 2021 Honda Civic Type R’s triple-pipe, centre-exit exhaust still doesn’t quite equal that of cars such as the Hyundai Veloster N. What it lacks in sound, however, it makes up for in speed, handling and dynamic athletic looks.

Looking ready for the racetrack doesn’t make the interior any less stylish or comfortable. Once you get past the fierce red accents, you see sumptuously comfortable sports seats, a flawless 7” digital instrument cluster, and a luggage capacity matching the WRX STI. There’s an additional 7” infotainment screen, and you can expect Apple CarPlay and Android Auto to work in there as standard features.

It’s no wonder that despite the competition out there, the Honda Civic Type R continues to be wildly popular in its class. Between the unique look, practicality and almost-unrivalled performance ability, there’s so little to dislike about this car, and the same will be true in 2021. Furthermore, Honda will soon unleash their fully loaded Limited Edition Type R, no doubt creating a new wave of special interest. It seems it’s going to be another good year for Honda.
