Honda is the new automaker that has committed to going all-electric. Toshihiro Mibe, the brand’s new CEO, declared that Honda would only sell all-electric and hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles by 2040. How the company plans to do that? Honda gave us a timeline and plans for phasing out internal combustion engines. It will obviously be a gradual process.

Notably, for the North American markets, Honda wants 40 per cent of its sales to come from fuel-cell and electric vehicles by 2030, 80 per cent by 2035 and 100 per cent by 2040.

The first two of the Honda EVs will use the GM’s Ultium battery platform, and they will enter the market in 2024. Both of these will be crossovers: one sporting the Honda’s moniker while the other carrying the Acura nameplate.

Although not confirmed, we believe the Honda EV will appear similar to what we have seen at Auto Shanghai. Yes, we are talking about the Honda e SUV prototype.

Honda will employ the Ultium-battery platform for some of its EVs until they bring in its own electric-vehicle platform, they call e:Architecture. The automaker plans to introduce the e:Architecture vehicles by 2025. They may arrive in the U.S. first before they hit roads in other countries.

The company didn’t tell how it plans to sell hydrogen-powered fuel-cell vehicles in America, Europe, and other countries. Presently, the only fuel-cell vehicle it sells in California is the Clarity.
