The all-electric 2021 Porsche Taycan tops the ‘Large Car over $70,000’ category and has become Australia’s best-selling luxury sedan, confirmed by the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries.

For a long time, the Mercedes E-Class and the BMW 5-Series have been ruling in this category, with the top position fully owned by either of the two.

According to statistics, Porsche sold 161 Taycans last month in comparison to 155 units of E-Class and 31 units of 5-Series.

Interestingly, it is the first time an EV has ever bested any category in the monthly VFACTS industry report. However, it is worth noting that the biggest EV distributor in Australia, Tesla, wasn’t part of the survey.

Nonetheless, only time will tell if these impressive sales show a real market demand or are just a backfill of orders for the Porsche’s EV that reach here 18 months later to its local launch.

Of note, the Taycan hit the Australian dealerships in March 2021, regardless of its introduction worldwide in fall 2019.

Porsche is offering it in three grades: the base 4S, mid-spec Turbo, and top-of-the-line Turbo S. The automaker is offering two battery packs for the EV with the dual-motor AWD model generating a massive 560kW/1050Nm. This huge power enables it to hit 100km/h in an estimated 2.8 seconds. However, independent motoring channels have recorded up to 2.4 seconds for the 0 to 100 sprint, which is remarkable.

The 2021 Porsche Taycan starts at AUS$190,400 (excluding on-road expenses) in Australia. The Turbo S costs AUS$338,500.
